BTSの歴史的な国連スピーチで英語学習

韓国の人気アイドルグループBTS。ビルボードでも1位を獲得するなど、世界中を魅了しています。そんなBTSが国連でスピーチを行いました。これはLove Yourself（自分自身を愛そう）キャンペーンの一環のもの。リーダーRMのスピーチは歴史的だと世界中から大絶賛されたのです。こんかいはBTSの国連スピーチで英語学習を行いましょう。

I used to look up at the night sky and wonder and I used to dream the dreams of a boy. I used to imagine that I was a superhero who could save the world.

昔の私は夜空を見上げて、どの少年もが一度は思い描く夢を見ていました。私は世界を救うスーパーヒーローになると夢見ていたのです。

And in the intro to one of our early albums, there’s a line that says “my heart stopped when I was maybe 9 or 10”. Looking back, I think that is when I began to worry about what other people thought of me and started seeing myself through their eyes.

BTSの初期のアルバムのイントロには、「9歳か10歳の時にハートが止まった」という歌詞のものがあります。振り返ってみると、そのころから私は他人の目を心配し始め、他人の目を通して自分自身を見始めたのです。

I stopped looking up at the night sky, the stars. I stopped daydreaming. Instead, I just tried to jam myself into the other molds that other people made. Soon, I began to shut out my own voice and listen to the voice of others. 

夜空を見上げるのをやめ、空想に浸るのを止めました。代わりに、私は他人が作った型に入り込むようにしたのです。すぐに、自分自身の声を閉ざし、他人の声に耳を傾けるようになりました。

 No one called out my name and neither did I. My heart stopped and my eyes closed shut. Like this, I—we—all lost our names. We became like ghosts. But I had one sanctuary, and that was music. There was a small voice inside o me that said “ Wake up man, and listen to yourself”.

誰も私の名前を呼びません。私自身、自分の名前を呼ばなかったのです。私のハートは止まり、目は閉じました。こんな風に、私は、私たちは、みんなは名前を失ったのです。私たちは幽霊のようになりました。しかし、私には音楽というサンクチュアリがあったのです。そこでは、私自身の小さな声がこう言いました「起きるんだ、自分の声に耳を傾けるんだ。」

BTS加入後も続く苦難

Even after making the decision of joining BTS, there were a lot of hurdles . Some people might not believe but most people thought we were hopeless, and sometimes I just wanted to quit. But I think I was very lucky that I didn’t give it all up. 

BTSに加入する決断をした後でさえ、数多くのハードルがありました。信じない人もいるかもしれませんが、多くの人々は私たちに希望はないと考えていたのです。そして、ただBTSをやめたくなったこともありました。しかし、全てを放り投げはしなかったので、私はラッキーだと思います。

If there’s anything that I’ve achieved, it was only possible that I had my other BTS members right by my side, and because of the love and support that our Army fans all over the world made for us.

Yesterday’s me is still me. Today, I am who I am with all of my faults and my mistakes. Tomorrow I might be a tiny bit wiser and that would be me too.I have come to love myself for who I am, for who I was, and for who I hope to become.

昨日の私は、それでも今の私です。今日、私はこれまで犯した全ての罪と間違いを背負っています。明日は少しだけ賢くなるかもしれませんが、それでも私のままです。私はありのままの自分、過去の自分、そしていつかなりたい自分を愛するようになりました。
