難関大学の入試問題～英作文（京都大学2004年入学試験英語）

今回は難関大学のひとつである京都大学の入試問題で英作文の学習をしてみましょう。
過去の出題で比較的平易な英作文問題がありましたので、今回はその問題にチャレンジしてみます。
しかし比較的平易だからと言って、気を抜いてはいけません。
簡単な問題であるからこそ、他の受験生と点差がついてしまわないように、しっかりと高得点を狙いましょう。

わたしは、家具や道具はなるべく木の素材を選んでいます。木は命あるもの独特のやさしい雰囲気があるので、心地いいんです。人工的な素材は新しい時が最高の状態だけれど、木は新品の時が出発点です。年月に磨かれて、味わいも美しさも増していく。そこが一番の魅力です。

特に難しい表現は必要としないようですから、先ずは頭に浮かぶ単語を並べていきましょう。

とりあえずは解答ができました。

余裕があったら、もうすこし洗練された英訳に挑戦してみましょう。
１センテンスずつ考えてみます。

わたしは、家具や道具はなるべく木の素材を選んでいます。

I select as far as possible furniture and tools which are made of wood.

– as far as possible：できるだけ、務めて。

I opt for wooden furniture and tools in case that I can.

– opt for：選ぶ、選択する、選んで決める。

I prefer wooden material in choosing furniture and tools.

– prefer：むしろ～を好む、むしろ～を選ぶ。

– in choosing：選ぶこと、選択する際に。

As wooden furniture and tools are my favorite, I select them instead of others if possible.

木は命あるもの独特のやさしい雰囲気があるので、心地いいんです。

・Wood is comfortable for me because it has its own kind atmosphere which is in life.
・I feel comfortable to wood which has some kind of special atmosphere in life.
・Wood has me feel comfortable with special alive atmosphere that ease me.

– ease：楽にさせる、やわらげる、安心させる。

– create：醸し出す。

– tenderhearted：優しい。

人工的な素材は新しい時が最高の状態だけれど、木は新品の時が出発点です。

・Wooden material starts when just it is finished although artificial material is in the best condition when it is completed.
・Although artificial material is at the peak when it makes its debut, wooden material starts when it is finished.

– peak：絶頂、最高点。

– debut：初めて姿を現す。

年月に磨かれて、味わいも美しさも増していく。

・Taste and beauty of wood will increase according to seasoning.
・Seasons will polish wood more tastily and beautifully.
・Flavor and fineness increase as years polish them.

– flavor：味わい。

– fineness：美しさ。

– as：～につれて。

そこが一番の魅力です。

・I am fascinated in it most.
・It makes me fascinated very much.
・That is the most attractive point for me.

問題（２）　次の文章を英訳しなさい

「イタリアといえばトマト」という印象が一般にはあるが、トマトの原産地はイタリアではなく南米である。さらに、イタリアでトマトが食用とされるようになった歴史はたいへん浅い。せいぜいこの二百年あまりにすぎないのである。イタリア料理の原点が古代ローマ時代にさかのぼることを思えば、「昨日」からの付き合いのようなものなのである。

Furthermore Italy has a very short history of using tomato as food. It is at most only recent two hundred years. 

The starting point of Italian food is going back to ancient Roman era so that some kind of association with tomato has just started since yesterday.

それでは他の表現も考えて見ます。

「イタリアといえばトマト」という印象が一般にはあるが、トマトの原産地はイタリアではなく南米である。

・People generally think the most popular food is tomato in Italy but tomato comes originally from South America, not Italy.
・The place of origin of tomato is South America although it is leaving a strong impression as food representing Italy on almost all of people.

– generally：一般に。

– leave impression：印象を残す。

さらに、イタリアでトマトが食用とされるようになった歴史はたいへん浅い。せいぜいこの二百年あまりにすぎないのである。

・Furthermore Italy has a just short history in which they eat tomato. It is only recent two hundred years.
・The history, moreover, of tomato in Italy is very short. Italians have just started to eat tomato only two hundred years before.

イタリア料理の原点が古代ローマ時代にさかのぼることを思えば、「昨日」からの付き合いのようなものなのである。

・Considering the starting point of Italian food is in ancient Roman era, they have just started the relationship with tomato since "yesterday".
・It is just like "yesterday" to become friends with tomato, if we look back the ancient Roman Empire where the roots of Italian cuisine was.
