難関大学の入試問題～英作文（京都大学2016年入学試験英語）

読んでみると簡単な日本語のようなのですが、英語に訳そうとすると、「う～ん？」と唸ってしまう。
そんな問題が出題されていました。難関大学の入試問題はやはり手強いです。
どんな問題だったのでしょうか、早速見てみましょう。

問題　次の文章を英訳しなさい

（イ）パンは手軽に食べることのできる食品であるが、実際に作ってみるとなると、出来上がるまでに大変な手間がかかる。

（ロ）特に、生地がしっかり膨らむまで待たなくてはならない。

（ハ）簡単にパンを焼けることが売りの家電製品を使ってみても、全工程に４、５時間は必要である。

（ニ）自分で経験してみて初めて、店頭で売っているパンのありがたみが分かるようになるものだ。

英訳のポイント

問題文は、小学生にも分かる程度の簡単な日本文です。
しかし、英文に直すのにはちょっと悩んでしまいます。
なぜでしょうか。
二つの理由があるようです。

各センテンスに主語がない

（イ）の述語は「手間がかかる」ですが、主語がありません。ですから英訳するには主語を補う必要があります。ふさわしい主語は何かと考えると、「パンをつくること」あるいは「パンを作る人（自分、あなた）」であると考えられます。こういった検討に時間を取られてしまいます。

（ロ）の述語は「待たなくてはならない」ですが、この主語も省略されています。（イ）と同様に「パンを作る人（自分、あなた）」であると考えられます。

（ハ）の主語は「パンを焼く人」とも考えられますし、「パンを焼き上げること」とも考えられます。

（ニ）の主語は「パンを焼いたこと、作ったことがある人」などが考えられます。

普段使うことがなく、ふさわしい単語や表現がすぐに浮かんでこない言葉がある

いくつかの表現に、知っていないと訳せないというものがあります。

できるだけ問題文に忠実に訳してみました。

Although bread is food to eat very easily, it's very troublesome to make it up completely if you bake. 

Especially you need to wait for a quite long time until making the dough enough rise thoroughly.

It takes four to five hours for the whole process even if you use a baking machine as a home electric appliance that is featured to bake easily. 

Such an experience by yourself for the first time make you understand the true value of the bread you can buy at the stores.

問題文を読み砕いて、英訳しやすい日本文にした上で訳してみましょう。

（イ）パンはどこでも売っていてそのまま食べられる食べ物のひとつであるが、もしそれを作るとするならば、食べることができるようになるにはいろんな作業が必要であり時間もかかる。
 
Bread is one of our food which is sold at any outlets and able to be eaten without cooking but it requires several process and takes much time until we can eat it if we try to bake it by ourselves. 
 
（ロ）発酵が完全になるのを待たなくてはならないことが最も大変だ。
 
Waiting for completion of fermentation is the biggest point to be patient.
 
（ハ）手軽なパン作りのための家電製品であっても出来上がるには4、5時間かかる。
 
Even an easy electric homemade baking machine needs four to five hours to finish it up.
 
（ニ）そのような大変さを経験すると、お店で売られているパンがどれだけお客さんを助けてくれているのか理解できる。
 
Through such an uneasy experience, we know how helpful bread at stores is for customers.

覚えておくと便利な表現を使ってみましょう。

作ってみるとなると→作るということになれば　 it comes to making

大変な手間がかかる→思いのほか手間のかかる経験をする　expeience a lot of trouble unexpectedly

全工程→すべての過程　all the procedures

～して初めて～→～まではそうではなかった　it is not until～that～

ありがたみがわかる→正しく評価することができる　appreciate

Bread is easily available food, but when it comes to making bread by yourself, you will experience a lot of trouble unexpectedly.

Especially you have to wait until the dough rises fully.

Even with an electric appliance whose selling point is to help you bake bread easily, it takes at least four or five hours to finish all the procedures.

It is not until you try to bake bread by yourself that you appreciate the bread that is sold at stores.

少し意訳してみました。

Baking bread is a quite hard job to complete in comparison to eating it very easily.
It takes a very long time for completion of fermentation that makes the dough expanded.
Full process requires four to five hours if it is made by an electric home bread maker the manufacturer advertise as a very handy machine.
Baking by yourself afresh tell you the bread on the shelves at stores is so valuable for you.

まとめ

試験において限られた時間で解答をすることはとても大変なことです。
今回は、主語、動詞、目的語をそのまま英語に置き換えるということが難しい問題の例でした。
文の構成も使ったことがなく分からない単語も、自分の英訳できる表現に読み替えて英作文するという方法で解答していくことができると思います。
練習を重ねて、本番で悔いが残らないようにしたいですね。
