A new study suggested that people are prone to make more sound, less risky decisions if they are thinking in a language other than their native tongue.
The series of experiments, conducted by Boaz Keysar of the University of Chicago, led the scientists to believe that ‘using a foreign language reduces decision-making bias,’ Dr Keysar’s team wrote.Dr Keysar wrote: ‘A foreign language provides a distancing mechanism that moves people from the immediate intuitive system to a more deliberate mode of thinking.’

The 121 students were given a hypothetical choice – first in English – whether they would save a set number of people, or take the risk of saving more people with a higher rate of failure.

In English, nearly 80 per cent of the students chose the safer option – to save 200,000 people.However, when the students were asked the same scenario in Japanese, only 40 per cent chose the safe-option number.
Researchers concluded the staggering results were due to what they call myopic risk aversion, or those whose decision-making abilities are rooted in emotional reactions of loss.

To further experiment with the theory, the team gathered 54 UC students who knew Spanish as a second language to place bets on a coin toss.
Each student was given $15 in dollar bills, and could bet $1 at a time on either heads or tails. If they bet and won, they could win $1.50, and lost nothing if they did not bet.
